Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a national key university emphasizing the education and researches of science and technology,  and with a focus on the coordinated development of disciplines in science, technology, management and liberal arts. It is one of the first Chinese universities to run a graduate school and among the first batch of “Project 211” and “Project 985” universities since 1949. The university is now under the direct administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In 1978, BIT resumed its graduate education which started since 1953. In 1981, the university got the approval by the state council to offer doctoral and master's degree programs. Three years later, BIT became one of the first 22 pioneer Chinese universities to run graduate schools.  Through 30 years’ efforts, the graduate education of BIT has made rapid development with its ever-improving education quality and growing research profile across a broad range of disciplines. BIT will strive to maintain its academic status in fostering highly qualified and innovative talents across the nation.

At present, the university offers 22 first-level doctoral programs, 97 second-level doctoral programs, 38 first-level master's programs and 193 second-level master's programs, as well as 11 degree programs of MBA, EMBA, MPA and MEng in 25 engineering areas. The university has 4 first-level national key disciplines, 5 second-level national key disciplines, 3 national developing disciplines, 24 national defense key disciplines , 3 Beijing municipal first-level disciplines, 4 Beijing municipal second-level disciplines, and 2 Beijing municipal key inter-disciplines. BIT also operates 19 post-doctoral research centers, 2 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering key laboratories, 3 national defense key laboratories, 4 national key disciplinary laboratories, 3 national key disciplinary laboratories for national defense technology, 6 key laboratories of Ministry of Education, 1 open laboratory of Ministry of Education, 8 Beijing municipal key laboratories, 1 postgraduate open laboratory of “Postgraduate Innovative Education Plan” of Ministry of Education, 4 Postgraduate Education Innovative Center of Technology and Industry for national defense, 6 University Graduate Education Experimental center and 3 National Education Centers, 2 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 9 Beijing municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, as well as a National University Technology Park. By the end of September 2011, there are 1976 full-time faculties in graduate school, including 507 doctoral supervisors and 1332 postgraduate supervisors. The total enrollment of full-time students in graduate school hits 10450, including 7675 master candidates and 2775 doctor candidates.

Many innovative and qualified talents have graduated from the university. By September 2011, BIT has 4234 doctoral graduates and 26932 postgraduates in total. Many of our postgraduates stand out in international and domestic competitions, and keep gaining academic rewards and funds from notable academic groups both at home and abroad. A great many of students’ research achievements have got National Award for Science and Technology Progress , State Award for Inventions and Ministerial Prize of Technology Progress. 5 of the doctoral dissertations have been selected as National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and 14 have been nominated.

Since China's reform and opening up, BIT has actively promoted international academic exchanges and cooperation with more than 100 colleges and universities from about 40 countries and regions, such as Technical University of Berlin, ETH Zurich (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Bauman Moscow State Technical University, University of Miami, and Tokyo Institute of Technology. We have established joint training programs for doctoral and MBA students with our partner colleges and universities, and employed nearly 100 foreign professors and scholars as emeritus professors, consulting professors or visiting professors.

With its advanced concepts of education, The School of Graduate Studies keeps improving the teaching quality. Through its various reform measures, the school aims to find and cultivate talents and prepare them for China’s industrialization, informationization, modernization of national defense, and assisting BIT in developing into a world-class university of science and technology.
