School of Software at BIT is one of the 35 China National Pilot Software Schools authorized by the China Ministry of Education and the China National Development and Reform Commission. The School was founded in March 2002, and she passed the Mid-term Evaluation in October 2003 and the Final Acceptance Inspection in June 2006. After 10 years of development, remarkable results have been achieved in the field of school-running mode, staff development, international cooperation, international exchange and talent cultivation systems.

There are 4 departments (Department of Software Engineering, Department of Digital Media Technology, Department of Information Security Technology and Department of Software Service Engineering (a joint effort with IBM)), 1 center (Software Testing Center at Beijing Institute of Technology), 2 Beijing Key Laboratory (Lab of Digital Performance and Simulation Technology, and Lab of Software Security Technology), 1 National Defense Technology and Engineering Center (Network Information Security Engineering Center). In August 2011, Software Engineering has been authorized as a first level discipline and is allowed to recruit PhD students in 4 second level disciplines. More than 2000 Masters of Software Engineering have graduated from the School and are well received by domestic and international software companies, national defense industry, information service industry, government and financial industry.

Aiming to cultivate “Creative, Interdisciplinary, Practical and Internationalized” talents, School of Software has 3 departments to meet the needs of software industry: Software Engineering, Digital Media Technology and Information Security, all of which were listed as Featured Specialty by Ministry of Education in 2007. When it comes to graduate student cultivation, we stress the interdisciplinary nature of software engineering and boldly changed the cultivation paradigm to suit the needs of different industries such as software service industry and information service industry.

School of Software lays great emphasis on the development of interdisciplines, vigorously exploring possible solutions for problems of software and other disciplines. Focusing on practical research and applications, serving “Integration of Informatization and Industrialization” and culture creativity industry in the field of artistic performance, digital movies and digital programs, we have formed an enriched multidisciplinary science system. In 2007, “Digital Performance and Simulation Technology” was approved as one of the Key Interdisciplines in Beijing.

School of Software students put great stress on the ideological and political education, the spirit of innovation, practical abilities, and all-rounded quality. To encourage students to engage in technological innovation, the School established a Student Science and Technology Innovation Center in 2008, which became “Software Technology University Students Innovation and Entrepreneurial Center at BIT” in 2011 and is open to all BIT students. Since 2008, our students from the Innovation Center won 92 international awards, 462 national awards, and 77 provincial and ministerial awards, including: First Prize in the 11th National "Challenge Cup" University Students Extracurricular Science Project Competition, Gold Prize of the Connect6 Tournament in the 14th and 15th International Computer Games Championship, Top Award in the "Zhongke Cup" Software Innovation Contest (two in a row), First Prize in China National Mathematical Modeling Contest, First Prize in America National Mathematical Modeling Contest, First Prize in China's Robot Competition and RoboCup Open, Top Award in China’s Creative Robot Design Competition, First Prize in National Information Security Competition (four in a row), Gold Prize in ACM/ICPC International University Students Programming Competition Asian Regional Final, First Prize in IBM-Jazz National Innovation Contest, Top Award in the 5th Beijing "Challenge Cup" Competition, and Gold Prize in the 7th Beijing “Challenge Cup” Venture Design Contest. In July 2010, 17 media including Guangming Daily and China Education Television reported on the Center, producing positive social influence around China. The students’ independent innovative activities play a great part in developing the spirit of innovation and scientific research.

Along with cultivating talents, School of Software undertook a lot of research and development work, including Security Systems and Simulation Systems for 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the 60th National Day Celebration, Shanghai World Expo, and Guangzhou Asian Games etc. Over 100 teachers and students were involved in these key projects, contributing to the success of the events, which helped win a good reputation for BIT and the School.
